Laying electric underfloor heating cable

Electric Heat Tracing Specification: Industrial Heat Tracing Systems

A turnkey solution for freeze protection and process temperature maintenance – ATEX/IECEx-certified materials and design compliant with IEEE 515 and IEC 60079-30.

Oxa Teknolojileri Mühendislik designs, installs and commissions electric heat tracing systems for pipelines, tanks and process equipment. The entire process, including hazardous areas, is handled by a single team. On this page you will find what the system is, where it is used, how we work and downloadable technical specification documents.

What Is Electric Heat Tracing?

Electric heat tracing (EHT) is a system in which heating cables are installed on the surface of pipes, valves, tanks and instrument lines to prevent the medium from freezing or to keep it at a specific process temperature. The heating cable sits beneath the thermal insulation and consumes only as much energy as the heat lost through the insulation.

The main types of heating cable used are:

  • Self-regulating cables: Automatically reduce their output as temperature rises; the most common solution for freeze protection.
  • Constant-wattage cables: Used on long runs and at higher process temperatures.
  • Mineral-insulated (MI) cables: Suitable for very high temperatures and harsh environments.

Why Oxa?

Single-Source Turnkey Delivery

Engineering, material supply, installation, testing and commissioning – the whole process is Oxa’s responsibility.

Certified Materials

We use ATEX/IECEx type-approved heating cables, junction boxes and RTD sensors, with Siemens, Schneider and ABB switchgear.

Full Standards Compliance

Design and installation comply with IEEE 515-2017, IEC 60079-30-1/-2, ISO 12241 and ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU.

Where Is Electric Heat Tracing Used?

  • Freeze protection: Water lines, fire mains and instrument tubing
  • Process temperature maintenance: Petrochemical plants, refineries, food and pharmaceutical facilities
  • Hazardous areas: Zones 1, 2, 21 and 22
  • Equipment heating: Tanks, valves, pumps and filters

How We Work

  1. Preliminary assessment: We gather site information, process data and the hazardous area classification.
  2. Design and quotation: We prepare heat-loss calculations (with a 30% safety margin), circuit design and pricing.
  3. Installation and commissioning: Installation, three-stage site testing, handover of operation and maintenance (O&M) documentation and a 24-month warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is electric heat tracing the same as underfloor heating?

No. Both use heating cables, but heat tracing is designed to protect pipes and equipment, while underfloor heating is designed to heat spaces. For space heating solutions, see our cable underfloor heating guide.

Which certifications are required in hazardous areas?

In Zones 1, 2, 21 and 22, heating cables, connection accessories and sensors must be ATEX and/or IECEx certified, and the system must be designed in accordance with IEC 60079-30.

How much energy does the system use?

Consumption depends on pipe diameter, insulation thickness, ambient temperature and the temperature to be maintained. The system is designed to run only when needed, under thermostat or control panel management.
