The W3001 and W3002 thermostat modules (XH-W3001 / XH-W3002) are digital temperature controllers widely used in carbon film heaters, egg incubators, control panels and hobby projects thanks to their low price and simple operation. In this article we look at the features they share, how they differ and which to choose when.

These modules are made by various manufacturers; menu codes, number of buttons and features may differ. Always follow the manual supplied with your product.
Differences Between the W3001 and W3002
Many manufacturers present the W3002 as an improved version of the W3001, and it can be used as a direct replacement. Common differences include:
- Menu and buttons: The W3002 has a separate SET button for menu access, with settings made through a more structured menu.
- Start and stop temperatures: On the W3002, the temperatures at which heating starts and stops are set separately; the mode is determined by the order of these two values.
- Delayed start: A relay delay setting is common on W3002 versions – useful for compressors or loads that switch frequently.
In practice both models do the same job; the choice usually comes down to ease of use and availability.

Points to Note with Carbon Film Heaters
The 10 A Relay Limit
A 10 A relay can theoretically switch about 2.3 kW at 230 V. Because heaters run at full load for long periods, it is recommended to limit the continuous load to around 80%:
- Recommended direct load: up to ≈ 1.8 kW (e.g. about 10 m² of 180 W/m² film)
- Larger loads: the thermostat should drive a contactor, with the film supplied through the contactor.
Mounting
The W3001 and W3002 are module-type controllers, not room thermostats. They must be mounted inside an enclosure or panel, with no exposed terminals. Pre-wired versions with a plug are convenient for practical use.
Sensor Placement
The NTC probe can be placed between two film strips as a floor sensor. In that case the device works on floor temperature and does not monitor room temperature. See our article on the floor sensor.
Which Model Should You Choose?
- W3001: Simple, economical and widely available. Sufficient for small carbon film applications, incubators, aquariums and hobby projects.
- W3002: For those who want a more structured menu and a delay setting. Can directly replace a W3001 if the latter is unavailable.
- For room heating: If you need scheduling, air + floor sensing (AF mode) and a higher current rating, 18 A wall thermostats such as the SV-7 or UTH-200 are more suitable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I build an incubator with a W3001 and carbon film?
Yes – low-power carbon film with a W3001 is a common combination for incubators. See our carbon film incubator kit for a ready-made solution.
Can a 12 V W3001 be used with 12 V carbon film?
Yes, but because current is high at 12 V, watch the 10 A limit. See carbon film for caravans and tiny houses.
Conclusion
The W3001 and W3002 are economical thermostat modules with similar hardware and a 10 A relay; the W3002 offers a more structured menu and a delay setting. Both suit small loads, but for room heating, programmable wall thermostats with floor limiting should be preferred. Contact us for help choosing the right model.
